COVID-19 UPDATE: For the safety of our employees and our valued customers, we are suspending remodeling projects until further notice. We will continue small projects and handyman repair and maintenance projects that require no more than one or two staff per project. We do this out of an abundance of caution and look forward to resuming full services when we can all safely gather together again.

Winter Blues! Winter 2020
Here in Albany, NY we are in the heart of the cold, snowy winter. We want our furnaces to work and we want the heat to stay inside to keep us warm. It sounds funny to say that but too often many of us live in homes that heat the outdoors! When drafty windows and doors let our warm air out and cool air in, we are paying to heat the outdoors. If you haven't checked your home for expensive air leaks around windows, doors and baseboards, now is the time to do it. You can have a home energy audit done. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has a wealth of information on energy audits. You can find an auditor to help you understand how energy efficient your home is and what you can do to stop air leaks to save on energy bills. There are things you can do on your own as well. With a simple tub of caulk from the hardware store, you can seal the edges of your windows and doors. Running a bead of caulk along all sides will fill air gaps to keep the air out. Check the baseboards too! For $5 for a tube or two of caulk, you can stop the cold air from streaming into your home or apartment. Making your home comfortable in the winter in the Capital Region can help keep those winter blues away!
5 Tips for Getting Ready for the Winter Season Fall/Winter 2019
Fall is here! The warm sunny days of summer have given way to the crisp days and cold nights of fall. Winter will be here before we know it. Five simple tips can help you make the most of the season with less stress and more savings.
1. Time for a Check Up. Before you start up the furnace for the upcoming heating season, have it checked to be sure it's in good working order. Your furnace, boiler or other heating appliance should be inspected before you crank it up. A cleaning and tune up can help keep the appliance working properly. It is important to check for leaks, faulty valves and other issues to be sure your boiler or furnace is operating safely and efficiently.
2. Be a Draft Master. A draft in the house that causes a chill you can't shake is so frustrating! Find the gaps, cracks and voids that are letting all the cold air in and driving up your heating bills. When you find a draft, the force of the cold air rushing in can feel like a tiny air conditioner. Just what we need on a cold winter day in the Capital Region of Albany, NY. Doors, windows and baseboards are the usual suspects. Be a draft master! Seal those gaps and cracks with caulk, weather stripping and door sweeps. Any pipes, ducts or wiring through your exterior walls can be sealed with caulk or foam insulation around the opening to keep the air out. Mastering small air leaks can lead to big changes in the comfort of your home and energy conservation.
3. Plan Ahead for the Holidays Now. When the holidays come, so do our guests. Now is the time to consider home improvement projects to make holiday hosting a breeze. Replacing a leaky faucet or tricky door knob can be done quickly and easily. Painting and new countertops for your kitchen or a vanity for your bath are great ways to refresh an old room. New cabinet hardware are another inexpensive way to get great results. Fixing loose handrails or replacing faulty or dim lights help keep everyone safe in and around your home. With a little planning, you can make small home improvements that will be pleasing to you and your guests as well as your budget.
4. Wrap it Don't Risk it. Protect your water pipes from freezing cold weather. Pipe insulation is a no-brainer low cost way to protect your pipes from the cold. You can usually find the insulation at a local hardware store for a few bucks. Exposed pipes in your basement or other areas where the temperature can drop below freezing or where cold air can breeze in are at greatest risk. A frozen pipe can be very costly to repair and can cause additional damage to your floors and walls. You can also insulate your exterior water hose spigot. An added benefit of insulation is energy conservation, keeping your hot water hot and saving you money too. Yup, a no brainer.
5. Detectors. No catchy lines here. Check your fire, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Replace the batteries and test the detectors to be sure they work properly. If it is time to upgrade, get the new 10-year detectors that don't need to have their batteries changed. Detectors save lives. They are important year-round. In the winter, when we use space heaters and fireplaces and light candles and cook and bake for the holidays, it is especially important to make sure detectors are working so we can stay safe. Do it.
